Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

How do I create my first assessment?
Once you've created your account, click "New Assessment" from your dashboard to launch the 5-step wizard. You'll set up your board (or select an existing one), confirm your terminology, add board members, review the invitation email, and then launch. The whole process typically takes under 10 minutes.
How many board members can I assess?
There's no minimum or maximum. The assessment works for boards of any size, and the price stays the same regardless. That said, we advocate for a board size between 5–9 board members to keep a good mix of expertise at the table while still being able to have rich discussions where each voice can weigh in.
Do I need to pay anything to create an account or launch an assessment?
No, creating an account and running an assessment are completely free. We don't ask for a credit card up front, and there's no subscription. You only pay when all responses are in and you're ready to generate the final report to see your results. Also, if you record the action steps that your board committed to in the BEA app, you'll receive a 50% discount on your next assessment (within the next 18 months).

Creating Assessments

Can I edit an assessment after launching?
Once an assessment is launched, the board name, organization type, and terminology are locked in to keep the experience consistent for participants. However, you can still add or remove board members, re-send invitations, and send reminders.
What happens if I save a draft?
Draft assessments are saved to your dashboard with a "Draft" badge and stay there until you're ready to launch. Board members don't receive any invitations until you click "Launch," so you can take your time getting everything right. You can return to a draft at any point to pick up where you left off, or delete it if you change your mind.
How do I add more board members after launching?
Go to the Manage Assessment page for that assessment and click "Add New Participant." Enter their name and email, and they'll receive an invitation email immediately with their own unique link.
Can I run more than one assessment at the same time?
Yes. You can have multiple assessments active at once and manage them all from your dashboard. This is useful for consultants working with several boards — creating different boards and running assessments for each of them at different or overlapping times is absolutely doable.

Managing Board Members

My board member can't find the invitation email — what do I do?
First, ask them to check their spam or junk folder, since automated emails from new senders sometimes get filtered there. If it's still missing, head to the Manage Assessment page, select that board member, and click "Send Invitation" in the action menu to resend it. If multiple members are having the same issue, it may be a domain-level filter — your IT team can whitelist emails from @boardexcellenceassessment.com and @mg.boardexcellenceassessment.com to fix this.
What if someone's email address changed?
You can update a participant's email directly from the Manage Assessment page by clicking "Edit Participant." Once you save the change, you can resend the invitation to their new address. You cannot update a participant's email address after they have submitted answers.
Do board members need an account?
No, board members never create accounts or set passwords. They simply click the unique secure link in their invitation email to take the assessment. This keeps things friction-free for participants and reinforces the anonymity of their responses.
Can I remove a board member after they've already submitted?
No. Once a participant has submitted, their responses are part of the aggregated dataset and can't be removed without compromising the integrity and anonymity of the report. You can remove participants who haven't yet submitted, but submitted responses are locked in.

Taking the Assessment

How long does the assessment take?
Most board members complete the assessment in 10–20 minutes. The format groups questions by topic so you can move at a comfortable pace, and a progress bar at the top shows how much you've completed.
Can I save my progress and return later?
Yes. Every page has a "Save & Return Later" button that stores your responses so you can come back via the same link in your invitation email. Your link works indefinitely until you submit, and when you return you'll pick up at the next unanswered section.
Will anyone see my individual responses?
No. Responses are aggregated into the final report, and even your board administrator cannot see who answered what. Open-ended comments appear in the report in random order with no names attached, ensuring the conversation focuses on the data rather than the individuals.
Is the assessment mobile-friendly?
Yes. The assessment is fully responsive and works on phones, tablets, and desktops. No app to download — just click the link in your invitation email (an internet connection is required). You can also start on one device and finish on another using the "Save & Return Later" button.

Reports & Payment

How much does a report cost?
A single report is a flat $1,950 USD or $2,750 CAD, regardless of how many board members participate. There are no subscriptions, no per-seat fees, and no recurring charges — you only pay when you're ready to generate your report. Tax is calculated automatically at checkout based on your billing location. If you record the action commitments from your board's debrief in the BEA app, we'll give you 50% off your next report (if used within 18 months). This is ongoing — so if your board commits to annual assessment, your reports will remain half-price.
What's in the report?
The report is a professionally designed PDF that includes an executive summary, scoring across all seven disciplines of the Governance Excellence Model, visual charts showing how your board responded, and the full set of anonymized open-ended comments from participants. It also includes recommended best practices and an action planning framework to help guide your debrief conversation. Reports are typically 25–35 pages and can be downloaded as many times as you'd like.
How long does it take to generate a report?
Most reports are ready to download within 1 minute of payment. You'll see a progress indicator on the success page, and you can navigate away if you'd like — report generation continues in the background. Once it's ready, you'll find the download link on your dashboard, and you can download the report as many times as you'd like.
What payment methods do you accept?
Payments are processed securely by Stripe, which accepts all major credit and debit cards as well as digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay. We never see or store your card details — Stripe handles all payment information directly. If you have a promotion code, you can apply it on the Stripe checkout page.
Do you offer a discount for repeat assessments?
Yes! We offer a 50% discount on your next BEA when you record action commitments from your current report within 6 months of purchase. After downloading your report, you'll see an Action Commitments section on the assessment details page where you can log the steps your board has committed to. Filling this out unlocks the discount automatically and applies it to your next report purchase. The code can be used up to 18 months from the time of your last report purchase.

Account Settings

How do I change my password?
Go to your Account Settings page and click "Change Password." You'll be asked for your current password and a new one. If you've forgotten your current password, log out and use the "Forgot password?" link on the login page to reset it via email.
How do I update my email address?
Visit your Account Settings page and update the email field. For security, we'll send a verification link to your new address. Once you click it, the change takes effect. Your assessments and reports remain unchanged — only your login email is updated.
Can I delete my account?
Yes. You can delete your account from Account Settings under "Delete Account." This permanently removes your account, boards, assessments, responses, and reports from all our systems and storage. This hard delete is permanent — there is no way to undo this.
